Greetings from Missouri, the SHOW ME State!

by Jonathan Owen, President, Missouri ACDA

owenWe had a wonderful conference this past July.  Our theme was “Rated E for Everyone”, and there truly was something for every choral director.  Six honor choir performed, including 4/5/6, 7/8 Mixed, 9/10 Mixed, Church and Community, All-State Jazz Ensemble and the All-State Show Choir.

Our current membership is at 683, with 153 student members.  At this past summer’s conference we had 202 active members present.  We also had 23 retired members and 44 student members.  The students participated in a “conference within a conference” and our Youth and Student activities R&S chair has been working diligently to encourage and mentor these students…the future of choral music in Missouri.  There were approximately 630 singers involved with our honor choirs.  If you add to that the audience members, guests, exhibitors and presenters who were not registered, our conference saw over 2,000 people.  It was a very exciting time.

As our church choir directors are beginning their rehearsals for Christmas cantatas, our high school directors are in full swing preparing students for their district honor choirs.  Students from all over the state will audition to be a member of the Missouri All-State Choir.  In January, MCDA sponsors the Missouri All-State Choir as part of our MMEA convention.  Alan Hightower, Luther College, will be our conductor.  Missouri is very excited to have Alan with us and working with our students!  Along with this, MCDA sponsors the Missouri State Sight-Reading Championship.   This competition occurs during the MMEA convention and the winner is introduced and presented a trophy prior to the All-State Choir concert.

Plans are already underway for our summer conference next year.  Our theme will be “ SHOW ME Something New”.  Our R & S Chairs are already busy working on getting our conductors, clinicians and session presenters.  I am proud to be from Missouri and have the opportunity to learn from some of the best choral conductors in the nation.  I am thankful for our R&S Chairs, who work so very hard to put together a great conference for our membership.  My goal for next summer’s conference is to have 315 members registered.

We are excited about the opportunities in working with the Sing Up campaign.  People can apply for a complimentary membership OR members can nominate someone who they feel would benefit from being a member of ACDA.  Our goal is to have 100% of the complimentary memberships claimed and we look forward to welcoming new members into our Missouri choral family!

Looking forward to seeing all of our SWACDA friends in Salt Lake City and then again in Kansas City!

Happy Singing,
Jonathan Owen
